Consequently, Coach Darrell Hazell wouldn't share afterward just who that No. 1 is. After the Gold team beat the Black team 12-7 in the spring game Saturday in Ross-Ade Sta- dium, a game in which neither Danny Etling nor Austin Appleby had particularly shiny numbers partly because of the play around them, Hazell was asked if incum- bent starter Etling was the top QB. "I won't answer that," he said. Surprising, perhaps, consid- ering Etling was listed as the No. 1 quarterback on the team's offi- cial depth chart as of Wednesday that week, and the team practiced only Friday after that and before the game. Etling and Appleby had been rotating working with the first- team offense throughout the spring, and both seemed to be productive. There were few turnovers throughout the practices, except in both of the scrimmages. On Saturday, Appleby had two inter- ceptions and fumbled twice, los- ing one. Etling fumbled but didn't lose it. In the jersey scrimmage a week earlier, Appleby also had an intercep- tion. In that s e t u p , Etling unofficially was 10-of-21 for 110 yards and a TD, while Appleby was 12-of-21 for 104. Etling got more snaps with the top offense, though, 33 of his 39, compared to Appleby's 14 of 38. But Appleby's numbers against the No. 1 de- fense were better: 6-of-9 comple- tions vs. Etling's 6-of-14. In the spring game, though, neither quarterback had the start- ing offensive line in front of him, nor the full corps of starting re- ceivers. Appleby's line more closely resembled a starting group with left tackle Jack DeBoef, left guard Jason King, center Robert Kugler and right guard Cameron Cermin, all of whom got significant snaps with the first-team offense this spring. Etling's right side had a pair of starters in J.J. Prince at tackle and Jordan Roos at right guard. But his center was freshman Kirk Barron, the left guard was Charlie Long and the left tackle was Jason Tret- ter, who is a right tackle/guard. With those groups, Etling completed 10-of-17 passes for 96 yards (and was sacked four times), and Appleby was 7-of-16 for only F O Ot ba l l : n e w s a n d n ot e s PRESENTS Julia Comodeca — Cincinnati, Ohio Senior, Civil Engineering Julia was one of 39 Purdue student-athletes honored as Distin- guished Scholar Award recipients by the Big Ten in July. Tom Campbell Danny Etling was listed as the No. 1 quarterback on Purdue's official depth chart only days leading into the spring game, but Coach Darrell Hazell wouldn't pro- nounce the sophomore the starter after it.
