OLYMPIC SPORTS
season, though. They hosted UC Davis
March 30 in Michigan Stadium, and
walked away with the program's
first-ever victory, in their first-ever
overtime game, with a 13-12 decision
in two overtime periods.
Freshman Anna Schueler, who led
the team with 26 goals and 35 points
as of April 20, scored five goals against
UC Davis, including the game-winner
in extra time.
"This is monumental for this
program," Michigan head coach
Jennifer Ulehla said. "What I'm really,
really proud of is every single one
of these young women who have
fought each and every day as we have
continued to grow and go through
difficult times and have kept their
minds set on where it is we want to be.
Today was about reaching a different
level. A big 'W' goes down in history
as one that was very memorable."
The Wolverines (3-11 overall, 0-5
in conference play) recorded back-to-
back wins over Cal (13-12 in double
overtime) April 12 and at Detroit
(16-6) April 16.
The win over Detroit was the
program's first victory in regulation.
"We were really pumped for this
game and we knew that we wanted to
come out strong and win," freshman
Kim Coughlan said. "During the
game, we kept telling ourselves how
bad we wanted to win, and win it in
regulation and not double overtime,
and that kept us going.
"Throughout the game, after each
goal, we kept pumping each other
up, and if we got scored on we kept
pushing each other and learning from
our mistakes — we didn't get upset
and just kept our intensity up." ❏
