17 A GLIMPSE Chapter One T he first time I saw my baby boy Bryant in the hospital de- livery room on a late summer afternoon in a Montgomery, Alabama hospital after just having given birth to him, I knew without question he was a special gift from God. To me, and I am certain to me alone, at that moment, there was something almost divine about him. Laying eyes on him for that very first time, I cannot even begin to explain the swell of love, raw emotion and absolute connection that surged inside of me. I not only felt overwhelmingly blessed, but I was convinced this pre- cious baby boy was a gift from God to me. I also knew in my heart this gift would last a lifetime. Bryant was my second child, but my first son, and I could not help myself. I marveled in amazement at how beautiful he was, yes, even in those first few seconds. Bryant Carlton Kite, with those piercing dark eyes and smooth olive skin, was certainly all-boy. But, still, to me, he was beauti- ful. Everyone else there that day thought so, too. And Bryant was also large. He weighed in at 9 pounds. I remember thinking right off the bat that one day he was going to be an athlete of some kind.
