21 BRYANT'S STRUGGLE BREAKS ME Chapter Two 21 B ryant's life was in jeopardy, the doctor explained to me a few hours later. The thought of losing him broke me completely. I went from feeling like something wasn't right to knowing there were serious problems later that evening when my pediatrician came in and explained the dire situation my baby faced. Bryant's birth was a planned c-section. My doctor told me that when they pulled Bryant from my womb he had opened his mouth. Bryant swallowed and aspirated a great deal of fluid. He was experi- encing serious respiratory stress. My baby was struggling to breath. He might make it. Might. The doctor told me Bryant had a 50/50 chance of pulling through. She also said his size could help him, but we would have to wait and see. She then told me Bryant's left ureter had a small obstruction. Af- ter he made it through the respiratory distress and was breathing well enough on his own, she explained Bryant would need further testing on his ureter.
