UNDER THE SKIN
Taking Under the Skin at face value, it's a
film about a dead-eyed, intoxicating alien
who preys on the innocent and drags them
to her dark depths. But it's about so much
more than that, and explores the human/
alien psyche and our own cold view of
life in 2014. Scarlett Johansson plays the
aforementioned alien in one of the most
daring roles of her career, and it's an in-
credibly unique film - using Kubrick's ab-
stract, visionary style and juxtapositioning
it next to the industrious, grey landscape
of rural Scotland. It makes for difficult
viewing, but Johansson's magnetic, un-
nerving performance drags you irresist-
ably into the murky depths with her, just
as she leads her on-screen victims to their
grisly demise.
The mysterious alien flick is more in touch with human na-
ture than it seems.
