A US company is planning to build an 'Outernet' - a global
network of cube satellites broadcasting Internet data to the
whole planet – for free.
APP OF THE MONTH
A New York based no-profit organisa-
tion, Media Development Investment Fund
(MDIF), has proposed to build hundreds
of cube satellites and send them into the
stratosphere to recreate a constellation
around the planet. This particular techno-
logical setting would allow anyone to ac-
cess Internet, for FREE, from all over the
world. According to MDIF, at least 40%
of people around earth are still not able
to connect to the web. That's not only
because of political restrictions, as it is in
North Korea, but mostly due to the high
costs of bringing service to remote areas
- therefore an 'Outernet' would solve this
problem. The organisation said that such
a massive project would be incredibly ex-
pensive, every satellite costing betweem
$100,000 to $300,000 to build and
launch, but it seems that willing investors
have already approached the project with
interest.
It allows you to reproduce bacon's sizzle
and smell through your iPhone. Sounds
good yeah? You just need to link this little
instrument (that looks a bit like a micro-
speaker) to your smatphone, and you'll
wake up to the smell of frying bacon.
Unsuprisingly the quirky device gets to
work the moment your dreaded iPhone
alarm goes off - but makes your waking a
little more joyful.
Unfortunately the device is a limited edi-
tion, realised for the company's latest ad-
vertising campaign.
But for all the unlucky people who won't
be able to win one through Oscar Mayer's
competition, there will still be the chance
to get an App that reproduces the sound
of bacon sizzling on the frying pan. Better
than the usual crushing, peircing alarm-
clock ring at least.
