7 Issue 62 / 2014 TRAVEL guestlist.net 5. Basilica de la Sagrada Familia Yes, it may be a cliché, and yes, there may be hordes of tourists queuing outside, but it's still worth visiting the Sagrada Familia to truly have "done" Barcelona. It's one of the city's most iconic attractions, and even if you decide not to queue up and pay for entry, it is still an incredible sight to behold from the outside. 1. Park Guell In the sunny weather, this is a stunning park which is well worth the journey out of the centre - whilst it is a big tourist attraction, it is filled with hidden areas and stunning views across the city. It is also a great place to experience Gaudi's surrealist, mosaic architecture without trudging round a museum. 3. Experience the "magic fountain of Montjuic" The collection of waterfalls, ponds and fountains stretching up to the Palau Nacional from the Placa Espanya is an incred- ible sight at any time of day. But on selected nights in summer, the whole area is lit up, with the big- gest fountain transformed into a multicoloured light display (ac- companied by some slightly odd music). Just turn up, take a bottle of wine, find a good spot on the grass to sit and enjoy the hypnot- ically beautiful sight. 2. Ride the cable car up Montjuic The cable car is arguably the best way to get to the top of Barcelona's mountain - they can be seen from across the city and provide an exhilarating ride and great views without having to get out of breath climbing in the sun. There is a historic fort at the top, but it is worth visiting for the stunning views across the city alone. 4. Get away from it all at one of Barce- lona's lesser known beaches Barceloneta is fine for a quick tanning top-up, but it can be- come very crowded, dirty and noisy with horrendous toilet queues at peak times. If you re- ally want to relax, make like a lo- cal and get a quick local train out just a bit further for a day of un- disturbed beach bliss - try Sitg- es, Badalona, Caldetes or Ocata. 53 TOP 5 THINGS TO DO IN BARCELONA If you can find the energy between all the partying, Barcelona is a great city to explore in the day. Sidestep the worst tourist traps and see the highlights with our quick top 5 guide to the best sights in Barcelona.
