sional football. He had relatively minor arthroscopic
knee surgery right after the season ended to clear up
a meniscus. He was cleared in mid-April to return to
begin working out. Those offseason workouts include
lifting and running four times a week for two hours
and then two hours of meetings on top of that.
With a new head coach in Jay Gruden and a new po-
sition coach in Brian Baker, Kerrigan is pleased with
the Redskins' transition.
"I think it has been smooth," Kerrigan said. "I know
we want to be a physical team and we have seen the
Ravens and Seahawks and what they have been able to
do by playing that way."
The defensive scheme is similar under the new staff,
but Kerrigan thinks it will allow for more opportunities to
make big plays. And Kerrigan thinks while his productivity
has been remarkably consistent in his first three seasons,
he knows he has to step
his game up.
"I think it is time
that I turn into a
dominant player,"
Kerrigan said. "It's
kind of like my se-
nior year at Purdue
when I was expected
to make plays and I
made them. I have
had moments of good
productivity and mo-
ments when I haven't
been as good."
On the heels of Ker-
rigan's above state-
ment about needing
to step up, which is a
little bold for him, it
doesn't take him long
to return to thanking
others for his success.
"All this stuff with
the Triple XXX, it all
started with Bernie
Flowers," Kerrigan
said about the Purdue
Hall of Fame receiver
who passed away in 2011. "I met him right after my
senior year in 2010 so I have to pay my respects to him.
He was a great man."
Kerrigan is well on his way to following in ole' Ber-
nie's footsteps.
And that is a mouthful.
