PURDUE.EDU/JPC JOHN R. WOODEN LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE ALEX TODD JR | CENTENNIAL, CO | SWIMMING AND DIVING The mission of the John Purdue Club, as an integral part of the Athletics Department, is to continue to maintain a financially self- supporting environment that provides the resources for coaches and staff to develop championship programs and for our student-athletes to develop both academically and athletically. The John R. Wooden Leadership Institute was started in 2010 by Purdue Athletics to help our student-athletes grow and develop the tools to become tomorrow's leaders. The Wooden Institute utilizes John Wooden's Pyramid of Success as its foundation to teach Purdue student- athletes the values necessary to be successful in their personal and professional lives. Classes and seminars are provided on a regular basis focusing on each of the strategic building blocks that Coach Wooden thought so valuable. The John Purdue Club and Wooden Leadership Institute strive to create a culture in which Purdue student-athletes who distinguish themselves as leaders are recognized for their efforts. One excellent example of the leaders the Wooden Leadership Institute is developing is Alex Todd. Alex is the epitome of a Boilermaker: hard working, loyal, dedicated and a servant leader. Alex is a junior on the women's swimming and diving team from Centennial, Colo. She is currently a nursing student and was Academic All-Big Ten this past year. Alex's studies draw her to the hospital most of the week to complete her clinicals, meaning she is unable to practice with her teammates during regularly scheduled practices. In order to remain ready to compete at the highest level, Alex goes to the pool and trains by herself during the busier month of her school year, following the workouts her coach leaves for her. The junior's remarkable self- discipline helped her achieve personal-best times this season, including a school record in the 100 fly. She reached the B finals in both the 100 and 200 fly to score at the 2014 Big Ten Championships. Alex is also a parishioner at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church on campus. She received the "Cathy Wright-Eger Continuing Women of Educational Excellence" Award, 2014 Top Recruiter Award, Academic All-Big Ten and Coaches Honor Roll.
