16 www.westernturfmag.com N o matter where I travel in the world to visit golf courses, it's always the same when meeting super- intendents. I recently took a trip to Southeast Asia and had the chance to meet Dan Brown at Da Nang Golf Club. The course is located in the central part of Vietnam and sits on the famous "China Beach." The title refers to My Khe beach in the city of Da Nang, which was nicknamed China Beach in English by American and Australian soldiers. The United States used Da Nang Air Base as a major base during the Vietnam War (1959–1975), stationing Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine units there. The base provided a place for rest and relaxation for troops. Dan is a mate and a superintendent from Australia. I had an outstanding trip to Vietnam and toured several courses in the central and southern part of the country. Integrated Pest Management is a big tool in a superintendent's management plan. I see it everywhere I travel. I try to learn as much as I can from superintendents. With Dan's help, I was able to pick up a few new thoughts to input into my own plan. Within a short time of visiting with Dan, you can tell he cares for the environment much like all superintendents do that I meet around the world. I visited Dan's course for the day and we played golf at another course the next day. We had plenty of time to talk turf. These are a few questions I asked Dan.
