The program's consistency through the majority of that stretch has had its foundation in defense and great goaltending. That trademark started to emerge in the postseason, but Kelly's early struggles and the gauntlet of a schedule the Irish faced forced them to find new ways to pull out wins. "Our guys expect to win," Corrigan said. "They know it's going to take 60 minutes of work. I think that's all a part of it. Clearly when you play the schedule we play, you learn that you have to make the plays when you have the chance." The chances are coming for the Irish now. The one piece of the puzzle that still eludes Corrigan is a national championship. Notre Dame has con- sistently been in the conversation for a title shot over the past decade, but never finished the run. The Irish came closest in 2010, when Duke beat them in overtime of the national champion- ship game. Corrigan said it's inevitable that a team will play in a couple different styles of games on a championship run. This year 's team was in danger of missing the tournament altogether before its recent four-game winning streak. They would be an unlikely group to capture the program's first national title, but their odds grow as they continue to find new ways to win games. ✦
