GoldanDBlack express • volume 24, express 28 • 18 Kugler on list Junior Robert Kugler was one of 64 players included on the Rimington Tro- phy spring watch list. The award is given to the best center in Division I. Kugler started 12 games at the posi- tion for the Boilermakers in 2013, after moving from guard as a redshirt fresh- man, and was the team's offensive MVP. "Robert's a great team player," offensive line coach Jim Bridge said this spring. "Ob- viously being voted our team MVP says a lot about what people thought of him and his performance. He brings a calmness out there because he's got such great experi- ence, and he's got a great knowledge of what we're trying to accomplish." new looKs After adding a matte black helmet to Purdue's rotation last season, Hazell has a couple more changes coming in 2014. It's possible one could be another en- tirely new design. All Hazell would say prior to a Coach- es Caravan event on May 15 was that Purdue will tweak its helmets for its Ham- mer Down Cancer game and its Military Appreciation Day games and that there would be a third change but he wouldn't disclose what that could be. In 2013, the Boilermakers had a flag incorporated in the 'P' decal on the hel- met for Military Appreciation Day. They wore the black helmets for the first time against Ohio State on Nov. 1 and again in the finale against Indiana. There won't be any changes to Pur- due's uniforms this fall, though, Hazell said. Boost in academics Hazell's ultimate goal is to have 50 of his players reach a 3.0 GPA, solidifying themselves a spot on the "A Players Get As" plague on a wall inside Mollenkopf Athletic Center. Still, he was happy to hit 47 for the spring semester. "I'm very happy with our grades," Ha- zell said. "Six guys with (a perfect) 4.0 a couple of those guys were engineering guys. That speaks volumes to how hard guys are working in the classroom. A cou- ple guys were right at the 2.93, 2.95 that were close. I'm really pleased with the 2.78 GPA as a team for the semester, driv- ing us to a 2.77 as a (cumulative). They're getting it. They're understanding." All of Purdue's QBs had at least a 3.0 GPA, including freshman David Blough's 4.0 in his first college semester. Etling, Austin Appleby, Ti Domhoff and Henry also were on the list. "That wasn't the case last year," Hazell said of all the quarterbacks meeting the criteria. "They're very competitive in the classroom as well. That's a great job by those guys." Hazell said there still are three players who need to pass hours this summer in order to be eligible in the fall. Senior tight end Gabe Holmes is among that group. j Warren Hill, ME '63 Jim Hill, MET '95, MBA '03 Jim Billard, LA '90 Brian Teyema, ME '87 Scott Dierking, IM '77 Russ Nelson, BCM '00 David Pikey, PH '97 Angela Billard, ED '90 Bill Silfies, MBA '03 Nick Muscolino, MET '06 Matthew Crawford, MET '05 Bob Hill, BCM '06 Ryan Stojkovich, BS '97 Mike Ivanovic, AS '81 Anthony Borgnini, ME '07 Anthony Camasta, MET '04 Beth Beigelbeck, SM '97 Deborah Toth, MET '07 Daniel Block, ME '08 Daniel Gasser, BS '04 Jason Jones, MET '08 Nick Johnson, BCM '09 Bryan O'Neill, BCM '09 Steven Sitkowski, BCM '10 Chris Summers, ME '10 Isaac Townsend, ME '10 Don Wunderlich, ME '13 Chris Gushurst, BCM '11 Taylor Spaulding, ME '12 Grant Fillipitch, MET '12 Jessica James, BS '13 Robert C Krier, MET '13 Joseph Ketcik, CE '13 Joseph Schraffenberger ME '13 We're proud to be Illinois' largest HVAC contractor and to have 34 outstanding Purdue alumni on our HVAC/Plumbing team.
