Vidal is one of 12 regional award nominees who, along with at-large nominees at the discre- tion of the National Awards Com- mittee, will be considered for the national ITA/Arthur Ashe Jr. Col- legiate Award for Leadership & Sportsmanship honor. Vidal won the award despite not playing in 2014 because of a stress fracture in her lower back. In her first three seasons, Vidal was Purdue's top singles player, tallying a 64-40 mark and also adding a 63-28 record in doubles. Medinilla earns rookie award Ricky Medinilla, a freshman on the Purdue men's tennis team, has been named the Intercolle- giate Tennis Association (ITA) Ohio Valley Region Rookie Player-of- the-Year. Medinilla is one of 12 re- gional award winners, along with at-large nominees, that will now be considered for the national Rookie Player-of-the-Year award. During his freshman cam- paign as a Boilermaker, Medinilla posted an overall singles record of 23-13 and a 14-9 mark in doubles. He was named second team All- Big Ten for his efforts. Bisset earns acadeMic Honor Diver Jamie Bissett was select- ed as a Capital One Academic All- District honoree for the second year in a row. Bissett is a general health sci- ences major with a 3.93 grade point average. After being among the regional honorees in District 5, he advances to the national bal- lot from which the Academic All- America teams are selected. Dis- trict 5 includes universities in In- diana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio. Bissett was a two-time Big Ten Diver-of-the-Week this season and was named a team co-MVP. He ranks in Purdue's all-time top 10 in all three diving events, moving up into third place in both springboard events during the 2013-14 campaign. kan naMed first teaM all-Big ten Junior Aurora Kan was named First Team All-Big Ten. Kan has had a solid junior cam- paign, winning three tournaments, posting five top-10 showings and nine top-20 performances, includ- ing her recent 18th-place tie at the Big Ten Championships. She's aver- aged 74.2 strokes per round this season, including four rounds of par or better, and posted a career- best score of 68 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in February. Kan was Purdue's lone repre- sentative at the NCAA Central Re- gional Championships but wasn't able to keep Purdue's streak of 14 straight years of having a team or individual compete at the NCAA Championships. VarsHo earns acadeMic all-aMerica For just the second time in school history, Purdue has an aca- demic All-American in softball. Senior outfielder Andie Varsho was honored for her success in the classroom with Capital One Aca- demic All-America first team hon- ors. She joins Jenny Schoen's 1998 achievement and also makes Var- sho the first two-time academic All- American in program history after earning third-team honors in 2013. Varsho boasted a team-best .416 average with a team-leading 45 runs and 26 stolen bases this season, ranking 44th nationally in batting average and 48th in sto- len bases per game (0.46). A program-record six Boiler- maker softball players were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association's All-Midwest Region in mid-May. Purdue previously had four selections in both 2008 and 1996, when just two 12-member teams were selected. In 2014, three 12-member teams were honored. First- and second-team selections are eligible for All-America honors. Varsho and senior third base- man Tori Chiodo garnered first- team honors. Senior catcher Dani- elle Fletcher and freshman desig- nated player Katy McJunkin were named to the second team, while sophomore pitcher Lilly Fecho and junior first baseman Ashley Bur- khardt earned third-team acclaim. swiMMing announces recruiting class Coaches John Klinge and Adam Soldati recently announced the 2014-15 recruiting class, a group of 10 swimmers and two divers set to join the program in the fall. Swimmers Anne Butts (Lafay- ette, Ind.), Alex Ford (The Wood- lands, Texas), Julianne Heyde (Car- mel, Ind.), Rachel Ho (West Lafay- ette), Abby Jagdfeld (Mukwonago, Wis.), Kaersten Meitz (Waukesha, Wis.), Sarah Pushis (Leo, Ind.), Emmy Rawson (Muncie, Ind.), Annie Spald- ing (Mishawaka, Ind.) and Caroline Weigand (Fort Wayne, Ind.), and divers Anna James (Midland, Texas) and Samantha Reese (Granger, Ind.) have committed to attend Purdue. James is a Texas high school state champion who has also com- peted internationally with USA Div- ing. She's headed to China this sum- mer for the FINA Diving World Cup. Freestyle specialists Jagdfeld and Meitz were high school team- mates on the Waukesha South/ Mukwonago co-op where they helped lead their team to three straight Wisconsin state titles. Jagdfeld was a two-time individual state champion in the 100 free and also won the 200 free as a junior.
