SOYLENT: THE BORING FUTURE OF FOOD Californian software engineer Rob Rhinehart has developed a chemical based liquid solution that can substitute solid food in the human diet. More at guestlist.net The mysterious and functional invention that is 'Soylent' is taking the world by storm. Originally created as a way of cut- ting the costs of grocery shopping and gaining sustenance on a tight budget, the mixture of chemicals in this just-add-water powder account for every nutritional ele- ment that the body needs in every-day life. Its creator Rob Rhinehart strongly believes that Soylent could be the answer to many of the world's problems such as mass food shortage or malnutrition due to an overly busy lifestyle. The solution has the ability to completely replace solid food in a per- son's diet with little or no physical draw- backs. In this respect, it's a revolutionarily perfect idea, millions of Americans have already subsidised the solution into their diets with thousands of new customers everyday. The longevity of its use does however pose some questions. The gloopy and bland tasting liquid can sustain a hu- man's functionality but cannot replace any of the enjoyment or social activity of eat- ing a good meal. It's likely that Soylent will play a big part in the future of food, but I'd still take a Sunday roast over a mysterious, clumpy liquid any day. 54 Issue 63 / 2014 FOOD guestlist.net FOOD SELFIES MAKE FREE MEALS Pop-up restaurant in Soho lets diners settle the bill by post- ing a photo of their meal to their social networks. A new Soho eatery has just opened its doors to the public. Unlike most restau- rants in the area, you won't need a wal- let full of cash to take your friend out to eat. The aptly named Picture House is a venture set in place by Birdseye as part of their 'Food of Life' campaign, attempt- ing to change perceptions of frozen foods and draw attention to their new range and quality. To pay for your meal, all you have to do is take a food selfie of your desired dish and post it to a social network with the hashtag #BirdsEyeInspirations. Research has revealed that over 52% of Brits regularly take photos of their food with 9% claiming that they feel compelled to post a food selfie everyday. Whilst this may seem a little mad, the Picture House are certainly on to something here and given the fact that they're practically of- fering free meals in central London, we're certainly not complaining.
