Students will work on a Banks dory—a traditional fishing dory designed to carry heavy loads—it's inexpensive and fairly easy to build. Park believes this is the perfect design to learn from because it combines elements of much larger boats in a small, easily handled boat. The class will cover pattern making, riveting, boat joinery, steam bending, oar making, and painting. Students as young as 12 are welcome. "Since the 1600s, there have been several boatyards around Marblehead Harbor and Little Harbor. Today, I am the only wooden boatworks in town," Park notes. "I grew up here, and I would like to stay and build the business." reddspondboatworks.com ● n 76 Craftsman ne Tools of the Trade: Park inherited many items from Redd's former owner, including his tools and a collection of antique anchors.
