traditional plank-on-frame construction
in the restoration. His group project at
the school entailed restoring a 1926 38-
foot R-class sloop made of cedar and oak
with teak and mahogany veneers.
His most memorable experience just
might be when he was chosen to work
as a shipwright on the restoration of the
1841 Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden
whale ship in the world. The ship, which
hadn't sailed since 1921, had its hull
almost entirely reframed and replanked.
Park focused mainly on the bow during
the project, which required a team of
shipwrights to log in more than 600,000
hours of labor to complete. The Morgan
set sail in May, making its 38th voyage
to historic ports along the New England
coast. "It's been almost 100 years since
the boat has set sail," he explains. "It will
be pretty awesome to see it full sail."
