2014 Loudspeaker Industry Sourcebook 42 VENDOR DIRECTORY T he audio business has dramatically changed over the years. The home sound system's legacy has been a receiver and speakers. Consoles with a turntable, amplifier, and speakers were marketed to the audio- unsophisticated in the 1950s and 1960s. However, those with audio knowledge purchased hi-fi gear, not consoles. KLH and a few others were market leaders, inducing decent all-in-one turntable audio systems in the late 1960s. But for the last 50 years the "default" serious audio system has been a receiver and speakers. Perhaps the large flat-screen TVs that shifted the focus away from sound, or maybe people just didn't have space in their living rooms for five channels, let alone six or seven bookshelf speakers. The home theater in a box (HTiB) did not change the configuration, but it began the consumer quest for a single vendor to package all the electronics and speaker systems. Space and budget did not permit a quality solution for surround sound. Then, the soundbar was introduced, providing an "instant audio" solution. Even earlier than the soundbar came the popular powered subwoofer, which was a precursor to combining enclosure, driver, and electronics. Today, all this is further refined by signal processing and wireless capabilities. Now the "integrated amplified speaker solution" (i.e., the soundbar) dominates audio retail sales. Even wireless capabilities are needed by OEM/ ODM vendors as most subwoofers are wireless (no audio cable connection) for plug-in-the-wall outlet and play operation. Many traditional speaker factories are fading. One-stop shops can supply the enclosure, drivers, and electronics, that have already been tested and boxed. You can sum this up with one word: soundbars, which are dominating the supply chain. To meet the demand, some electronics vendors have moved into integrated solutions. Some speaker vendors have also expanded, merged with electronics vendors, or simply outsource the speakers for inclusion into their finished products. In any case, the typical audio engineer is selecting a finished package or at least picking and choosing from a select menu provided by the integrated solutions provider.
