Photo by Margaret Brand Elder abuse in our own back yard AThing or Two A disturbing case of elder abuse has raised its ugly head in Rideau Lakes. Elder abuse is often defined as any act or omis- sion that harms a senior or jeopardizes his or her health or welfare. Elder abuse can take place in the home, in other residential settings, or in the commu- nity. It is estimated that between four and 10 per cent of Ontario ’s seniors experience some type of abuse. Steps to help eliminate elders are taken at various levels of governments in Canada. But we as citizens must be very cognizant of methods to assist in this abuse, abuse of some of our beloved family and friends. Officials who work in this field, highly suggest the first level of prevention is our personal monitoring of the people. Be aware of those sur- rounding you, in your home, in your community or in homes or hospitals where the elderly are being cared for. A local family wants to raise awareness of such abuse, as it does happen in our communities. In this case, a person, known to the family, allegedly “signed out their mother from a retirement home under the guise of a friendly outing. The moth- er is well physically, but is having memory problems. Then the man asked her to sign a Power of Attorney form that would allow him to have some control over her funds. Next came a trip to one the local banks, of attempting to withdraw her money. Fortunately, the alert bank teller, know- ing all of the people involved, became suspi- cious and called the fami- ly. Presently the police and lawyers are attempting to verify this incident and Scotty’s Scoop take the proper steps nec- essary. Thanks to the family, we are now more aware of such a scheme and will be more educated. In turn, our elders will be safer. Hope- fully an ice pack was applied at home and all is back in good shape, although discoloured from the bruising. •Late last fall a couple from the big smoke, bought a lovely home on the Rideau in Westport, behind the Mulville farm. A great lover of fishing, the man ‘tied’ his boat to the adjoining dock and went to sleep. During the night the boat was dis- lodged by the wind and floated in the breeze down to the Narrows. Themysti- fied owner thought some- one stole the boat until it was discovered in fine shape, with the two ropes dangling overboard. You don’t need to know his name but he is the owner of the fish store on Main Street. Drop in and say hello to ‘Knot’ and enjoy his famous fish and chips. •Bill Monahan orga- nized a golf tournament in aid of cancer research last Friday at Evergreen Golf Course. Just over $1,000 was from entry fees with the remain- der coming from special competitions, an auction, and a draw for a solid oak blanket box, made by Bill, with a hand stitched quilt. A great big thank you should be passed on to all the local merchants who supported this event with prizes of merchandise and gift certificates. Also the efforts of the volunteers who helped out, Judy Pat- tinson, Lisa Monahan, and Doreen Monahan who did their best to make it a smooth running day. The players would also like to thank all the individuals who stepped up with prizes to fill out the table. The convener, Bill Monahan has a very per- sonal reason to run this event – mother, father, brother, daughter, sister, wife, niece and nephew. Thank you on their behalf. Special gratitude is passed to Bill for his supe- rior efforts for a wonderful cause, a cause that is grad- ually resulting in the con- trol of such a dastardly disease. •Mike and Ed Adrain have serious health prob- lems.
