JULY 2014 ■ 149 ■ PACK PAST shock back in April when Murphy, a member of the NC State Athletic Hall of Fame elec- tion committee, saw his name on the list of nominees for the 2014 class. He was overwhelmingly elected as part of the third 10-member class in the three- year-old hall, becoming the first special con- tributor for his lifelong support of NC State athletics, as a financial contributor, a univer- sity leader and a hardworking state legislator whose leadership helped Wolfpack men's basketball get a new home in 1999. I want to win at anything I do, even if it's just a game of checkers. Sadly, I'm not even very good at that. I tried so hard and wanted so much to be an athlete and to make a team, but I just didn't have the athletic talent. Zero." That's okay. Both of their contributions have been inte- gral to the success of the department. Murphy is known to Wolfpack fans for his unwavering physical support — he's been to just about every home and away football and men's basketball game since 1965 — and his fiscal support of the program. In a lifetime of giving, Murphy has contributed millions to the Wolfpack Club for scholarships and capital campaigns.
