It requires reminding, when necessary, how not to work. Gentle prompting, when necessary, how not to respond to adversity. Cautioning, when neces- sary, how not to truly forget. Hazell and his coaching staff have needed to find the balance of when to use last season for fuel and when to shove it in the past. They've needed to find the right buttons to push to pre- vent repeat performances but, mostly, they've stayed positive and optimistic. "We understand what happened," offensive coor- dinator John Shoop said. "We are going to get better. That's the thing. It's not like you walk in (Mollenkopf) and morale is low. It's like, 'We're figuring it out.' We know what it takes. We get it. "The one thing is the tempo now is set by the strong. When they set the tempo, all the other guys who were maybe a check-it-off-the-list guy or were maybe the last-one-in-first-one-to-leave types of guys, they stick out like a sore thumb. Now, we've got a bunch of guys who work their tail off." There may not be whole- sale changes to the overall approach, but after Year 1, certainly there have been adjustments. After not individually meeting with all players after taking the job in De- cember 2012 — perhaps a misstep, especially consid- ering the loyalty many held for the former coach — Ha- zell finally sat down for get- to-know-you sessions with players before the spring. It brought clarity.
