74 ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 24, ISSUE 6 f the idea to pay tribute to those two greats," owner Greg Ehresman said. "It was pretty cool." Ehresman has since built on the tradition that Griese and Keyes started. The tradition established by Ehresman and Co. is to allow former athletes — Drew Brees, David Boudia, Bernie Flowers, Nick Hardwick, Ryan Kerrigan and Duane Purvis among them — to create their own sandwiches that are then named after them. And there are more to be honored. There has been a sense of urgency to find a female ath- lete to honor as well, maybe former women's basketball players Katie Douglas or Stephanie White. "We love everything the athletes represent at Purdue," Ehresman said. "We are all about hard work, tradition and doing things the right way. Bob and Leroy have filled a life- time of doing that." Ehresman said the next time Griese is in town, he will be happy to do the "big correction" and name a grilled pork tenderloin after the two-time Super Bowl champion quar- terback. "We are all about getting it right, that is for sure," Eh- resman said. Still, Keyes may have put it best when reflecting on what it means to be viewed as a football legend, capped by the unique honor of having a sandwich at Triple XXX. "During that time span when Purdue football was at its zenith back in the 1960s, we didn't have undefeated seasons, but we had solid programs, nationally relevant teams," Keyes said. "During that time span, I think a lot of people remember that passion, whether they were sitting in the stadium or whether they were sitting at Triple XXX. "There was something special in the community about Purdue football. To be a part of that era with a guy like Bob Griese is a true honor." j Triple XXX Family Restaurants/Route 66 Diner salute Bob Griese and Leroy Keyes and the 1967 Rose Bowl champs Indiana's Oldest Drive-In On the Hill, But on the Level Since 1929 Triplexxxfamilyrestaurant.com
