Emotional weekend for Jr. B. organization Rideaus' captain facing brain tumour with high spirits The Westport Rideaus had a successful weekend on the ice but something more important was weighing on players' minds. Team captain Andrew Thorne suffered a seizure Thursday and was taken to Kingston General Hospi- tal (KGH) where doctors discovered a brain tumour. He was scheduled for an operation Wednesday (Oct. 7). "He is very upbeat – he thinks he is going to be back in school and playing hockey in a few months," said Mike Seed, Rideaus head coach and GM. "It is the first thing he asked his doctors, "When can I get back playing hockey, but he has a tough battle ahead of him. Thorne, who attends Queens' University, was headed to his room Thurs- day morning to get some papers when he blacked out. The next thing he remembers seeing is a paramedic. His parents, from Oakville and his grandpar- ents were at his side by Thursday night. Thorne's father was originally from Kingston where his grand- parents and some extend- ed family still live. Three doctors in North Leeds, Drs. Elaine Rid- dick, Ian Shiozaki, and Brian Trickey were part of an application submitted for a July 30th intake to the province for the cre- ation of 19 new family health teams. The government will be offering funding for teams located in eight Local Health Integration Net- works (LHIN) in regions across the province. The regions were chosen for their prevalence of resi- dents without a family doctor as well as the prevalence of chronic dis- ease. The Southeast LHIN submissions to the min- istry numbered five in the July intake, which was the fourth wave of funding the ministry has given to the FHTs which now number over 150 across the province. A Family Health Team is a new primary care model for the province which provides improved access to care for its patients who can see another of the team's doc- tors in their own doctor's absence. The doctors can have separate clinics and as a team can sometimes offer access to other health pro- fessionals including nurse practicioners. Dr. Elaine Riddick, a Westport resident lead the charge for an FHT in the Westport area and handled the submission of the application with the assis- tance of a consultant. With or without the ben- efit of the creation of an FHT, before the end of the year Riddick will begin practicing out of a new medical clinic in Westport. •Continued on page 2 Westport, Ont. www.review-mirror.com Thursday, October 8, 2009 Vol. 116, No. 41 $1 (95¢ plus GST) REVIEW MIRROR Our 106th year serving the North Leeds area THE Our 117th year serving the North Leeds area 1-613-273-2100 1-877-268-8247 bryan@rideau.net htttp://www.thecottageguy.com Affordable Quality Furniture For Every Room Mon. - Fri. 9AM - 5PM Sat 9-5 • Sun 11-4 96 Perth St., FREE DELIVERY Elgin, Ont.K0G 1E0 (613) 359-5290 250 Lombard St., Smiths Falls (613) 283-8000 www.jamesfurnitureandflooring.ca FLOORING KITCHENS BLINDS 250 Lombard Street SMITHS FALLS 613-283-8000 ZZZMDPHVIXUQLWXUHDQGÀRRULQJFD • Free Estimates • In-Home Consultations • Professional Installation 63073 •Free Estimates, •In-Home Consultations •Professional Installation COBURN REALTY Westport TERRY BRYAN Sales Representative P P e e t t a a l l s s & & P P r r e e s s e e n n t t s s F F L L O O R R I I S S T T 29 M a i n S treet, E l g i n , O n t ario ( 6 13 ) 35 9 - 5572 1 - 8 0 0 - 377 - 77 20 Fourteen elementary schools took part in the 12th annual Gladys Burt Memorial cross-country meet at Rideau District High School in Elgin on Wednesday.
