KM STRUGGLES TO SURVIVE WHILE LEGAL PROJECT MANAGEMENT THRIVES The legal profession is going through a significant period of change. Legal project management provides law firms with an opportunity to recast their services in a much more structured and predictable manner. KM professionals need to grasp these opportunities with both hands, get out of the back office, align themselves with these new initiatives, and demonstrate the value that high quality information — whether generated internally or externally — can add to the overall project or process. This change will not necessarily be easy or pleasant but ultimately it will be far more rewarding. ILTA More Resoures Online In my role as Peer Group Vice President, I am often asked questions by members such as: • Our firm wants to start a KM program; how can I learn more about the basics? • What are the hot topics in legal KM circles these days? • How can I stay current on what my KM colleagues are doing? I am pleased to say that these questions — and more! — are addressed in the bibliography “Resources for Law Firm KM Professionals.” The bibliography covers a variety of areas including books (general KM titles and those specific to the practice of law), periodicals and blogs. It also includes a listing of KM-related professional organizations, associations and meetings. An added bonus is the inclusion of KM LinkedIn groups to join and Twitter accounts to follow. This listing of materials was compiled by Debbie Panella, Director of Library and Knowledge Services at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP. Debbie’s role at the firm is to develop and implement initiatives, policies and practices to enhance the effective use of information resources in the firm. Her background and experience lend themselves quite readily to this endeavor. Debbie genuinely believes in “sharing knowledge” and we thank her for her efforts. As Debbie notes, this is a selective listing of resources that was enhanced by input from other KM practitioners. If you have a suggestion — or several — to share, please contact her at dspanella@cravath. com. We expect the bibliography to develop over time and updates will be posted on ILTA’s website (under the resource section on the Knowledge Management Peer Group page). Happy KM surfing, blogging and tweeting! Catherine Monte ILTA’s Knowledge Management Peer Group Vice President www.iltanet.org Knowledge Management 53
