2010 Knowledge Management Survey Analysis by Firm Size L ast year we published our biennial KM survey results in the “Knowledge Management White Paper.” In response to a number of requests, we have now published the survey results by size of the organization. The survey results by size of organization include the results for most questions. However, for some questions that were purely individual written responses rather than numerical, we have not broken the responses down. For example, on the questions regarding what firms were doing to support fee estimates, alternative fees and project/matter planning, we found that the range of activities did not vary significantly by size of the organization. You can see the full range of responses in the original full survey results. There were many similarities between the results, and some expected differences. For example, we see that as the size of the organization gets larger, the more likely it is that KM is operated through a separate department with a separate budget. We also see that as the organization gets larger, the more likely it is that the person leading the KM program is a CKO or similar title. Smaller organizations are more likely to have a practicing lawyer leading the KM initiative. However, large or small, most KM departments report to senior management and all expected the number of FTEs focused on KM to remain the same this year. With respect to priorities, the smaller organizations seem most focused on DMS and email management, while the larger organizations are focused on enterprise search and new portal implementation. We hope you find these survey results useful. We will undertake the full survey again early in 2012 for publication in the spring of 2012. If there are specific questions you feel we should include, please contact the Knowledge Management Peer Group Steering Committee.
