Best Of The Rest Sierra Romero was one of four female Wolverines named Big Ten Athlete/ Player of the Year in 2013-14 in their respective sport, and two of those are on this list of other top female athletes at Michigan (the third, runner Erin Finn, is The Wolverine's Rookie of the Year). 1. Emina Betkas, tennis — One of three Wolverines in school history to gar- ner All-America honors three times, Betkas was the Big Ten Player of the Year af- ter going 10-1 in league matches at the No. 1 singles position. Betkas was 38-8 overall on the season (for a career-best .826 winning percentage) and now has 96 singles wins in her tenure, needing 17 more to take over Michigan's top spot. 2. Rachael Mack, field hockey — In her final season, Mack became only the ninth player in Big Ten history to be named the conference's Player of the Year and its Of- fensive Player of the Year. The Bromsgrove, England, native scored a career-high 21 goals in setting a Michigan career record with 73 markers and 166 points. 3. Nkem Ezurike, soccer — A 2013 first-team All-Amer- ican, Ezurike led Michigan in goals (14) and points (38) en route to an NCAA Elite Eight appearance, while tal- lying a career-best 10 assists. She reached double digits in goals for the third time in her career, finishing as U-M's record-holder with 49 markers and 118 points. 4. Joanna Sampson, gymnastics — A Big Ten individual champion on the uneven bars and floor exercise, Sampson placed runner-up nationally on the floor while earning three NCAA All-America honors. The senior captain helped lead U-M to conference and regional championships and was named the NCAA Northeast Region Gymnast of the Year. — Michael Spath In her senior season, Rachael Mack was named both Big Ten Field Hockey Player of the Year and the con- ference's Offensive Player of the Year after scoring a career-high 21 goals.
