Limelight 2013/14 Year in review 31 Lunchtime talks Lunchtime talks are a staple of our annual events. In 2013, there were technical presentations on the City of Cape Town's Community Residential Upgrade project, the New Zealand 2011 Earthquakes, Asset Management and our very own 5 Star Green Building. However, the big crowd attractor was a presentation on Managing Your Personal Finances Regarding Tax. Limelight Week The week kicked off with a morning tea, followed by a bingo-style speed networking session. A heated Great Debate arose between the engineers and environmentalists over whether or not Aurecon should get involved in fracking. Groups got together to determine who could build the best contraption to save their egg from following in Humpty Dumpty's footsteps. Then on the last day of Limelight Week, 10 teams competed with each other to win the Amazing Race around Century City. Even a team of unit managers joined in the fun! Community initiatives Limelight Western Cape had a number of 2013 'collections' – Easter eggs, blankets and Santa's Shoebox presents. We also look at activities that include giving our time and since 2011, a group of about 20 volunteers have spent one evening every two weeks tutoring maths and physics to students at the Cape Academy of Maths, Science and Technology. One of the students sent a message to say "I don't think you realise how much you've affected our lives. Many of the frequent tutees have been accepted at universities across the country." For Mandela Day, 60 participants signed up to run/walk 2km laps around the canal as many times as possible in 67 minutes. Everyone else was encouraged to sponsor participants for each lap they were able to complete. At the end of the day an astounding ZAR26 000 was raised and donated to the Peninsula School Feeding Association. Aurecon also held a Christmas party for the patients at the Red Cross Children`s Hospital. A few staff volunteered to spend their time interacting with the children at the hospital. Presents including food snacks and hygiene items were given to the hospital. University and industry engagement Aurecon's bursars are future Aurecon employees and emerging professionals, so we support this through the buddy programme. The annual bursary function involved both bursars and buddies/mentors putting on their personal 'hats'. Limelight Western Cape also recognises the importance of industry engagement and encourages emerging professionals to attend Consulting Engineers of South Africa (CESA) and South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) events. These events include CESA's professional registration workshop and touch rugby tournament, as well as SAICE's cocktail evening which involves networking with students. Environmental awareness The 'Take Public Transport to Work Day' promoted the use of environmentally friendly modes of transport. This initiative encouraged awareness of participants' carbon footprint whether they used car, train, bus, tax, bicycle or foot… with a bit of friendly competition between units really pushing things along.
