ARE PLAYING HUGE FESTIVALS LIKE SW4 - YOU MUST'VE HAD TO LEARN QUICKLY! DO YOU ENJOY IT MORE NOW? Actually, i am loving playing live and it is almost like bringing my studio with me. I was never very good at the vinyl mixing aspect, i am a computer geek, i grew up playing music on computers and instruments, just like my video games. So once everyone went digital, DJing is a natural extension of what I do in the studio except now i am doing it live and i am really loving it. In a way, I am happy that it has worked out this way, everything is still very new and fresh to me. I feel like a kid just starting sometimes. IN YOUR BBC ESSENTIAL MIX YOU BLENDED YOUR EARLY 90S PRODUCTIONS SEAMLESSLY WITH YOUR VERY RECENT MATERIAL - DO YOU ENJOY PLAYING OUT THIS STUFF AT A FESTIVAL AND SEEING THE REACTION OF A MUCH YOUNGER CROWD TO IT? It is incredible to see someone who is 15 or 20 dancing to "Always" or Nightcrawlers or Jodeci.... It gives me great joy to know that the music i made in the past seems to have stood the test of time and the new stuff is the same....i guess it's all new to the new fans. HOW IS YOUR PLEASURE STATE PROJECT WITH LEE FOSS AND ANABEL ENGLUND COMING ALONG? DO YOU GUYS EVER PERFORM LIVE TOGETHER AS ONE ACT? It's coming along quite nicely, although with our crazy schedules, I will admit it has been a little difficult lately to get back into the studio. Yes, we will be performing live this year on special occasions. THE AMOUNT OF QUALITY, SUCCESSFUL REMIXES THAT YOU'VE PRODUCED IN A RELATIVELY SHORT SPACE OF TIME IS INCREDIBLE. DO YOU THINK YOUR YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WORKING IN RNB AND POP HAVE HELPED TO GIVE YOU AN EDGE WHEN IT COMES TO WORKING WITH COMMERCIAL MATERIAL? I guess it has, I don't really think of my work that way though, I approach each record based on what inspires me about it, both on my own originals and also on remixes. ONE OF THE THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT YOU IS THAT, UNLIKE MANY SERIOUS "HOUSE" PRODUCERS THESE DAYS, YOU ARE WILLING TO EMBRACE ALL GENRES AND NEW TECHNOLOGY IN MUSIC. DO YOU THINK THIS WAS SOMETHING THAT ACTUALLY HELPED YOU BECOME SO SUCCESSFUL IN TODAY'S MUSIC SCENE AFTER YOUR BREAK? I consider myself a producer first, i love all sorts of music, not only house, although it is my favorite, i love R&B, indie, chillout and new technology is my drug...i am addicted...i want it all, i love learning new things and using new toys...it probably comes from being a video game geek. IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'LL BE SPENDING MOST OF SUMMER 2014 PLAYING BETWEEN IBIZA AND THE UK, BUT YOU'RE OBVIOUSLY ORIGINALLY FROM AMERICA. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE UK THAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK? I have grown to love England, I love the culture, the people, the music and arts scenes are so free and innovative, i sometimes wish the States were more like this. WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE FESTIVAL MEMORY SO FAR? That is a really unfair question, there have been so many and such diverse memories.... the first would be when everyone started singing the "Look Right Through remix" and probably the funniest was in Ireland when the crowd starting singing the soccer chant to my name .... from out of nowhere, they spontaneously started singing MK, MK olay MK olay olay MK MK.... that was definitely memorable and of course, all the girls sitting on their boyfriends shoulders with their tops off leaves an indelible imprint on my memory too hahah. IT MUST BE PRETTY HARD FOR YOU TO IMAGINE, BUT IF YOU WEREN'T MAKING MUSIC, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING? Well, my last real job was working in a parking garage and i was assigned to AREA 10, so i named my label after that. who knows, professional video gamer? YOU'VE HAD A PRETTY LONG AND EXPANSIVE CAREER SO FAR, BUT DO YOU HAVE ANY STANDOUT MOMENTS THAT YOU'RE ESPECIALLY PROUD OF? A funny one i remember a few years ago, when i started getting back into house, I was in a studio producing a Pitbull track with AfroJack and a few other people and then Laidback Luke came into the session and Afrojack introduced me to Luke "Oh Luke, this is Marc Kinchen" Luke fell to his knees and started bowing at me and I started laughing not knowing what he was doing.... neither did Afrojack... So Afrojack said Luke what are you doing? LUKE said omg this is MK, I am meeting MK... Afrojack said what do you mean? Luke said this is MK, Marc Kinchen is MK.... it was pretty funny, Afrojack and i had been working together for months and he never knew, he thought i was just known as Marc Kinchen R&B guy. i wish someone had a video, it was very funny and awesome and it made me proud that now the guys in the studio had some context about my work and what i had accomplished in the past aside from the R&B stuff. YOU GREW UP IN DETROIT DURING THE BIRTH OF THE HOUSE MUSIC - WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF TODAY'S SCENE? Yes, House was in it's early days back then, the scene is great especially in Europe, the US is catching up though and turning onto more sultry house grooves, i just think its warm and makes you want to dance and groove. ARE THERE ANY OTHER PRODUCERS AT SW4 WHOSE SETS YOU'D LIKE TO CATCH? its usually hard to catch actual sets because of everyone's travel schedule, but I would love to see Skream, Eats Everything, Jamie Jones, Maya Jane Coles, Shadowchild, Gorgon City, Second City, MJ Cole, Claude Von Stroke, Maceo Plex, Loco Dice and about a thousand more....probably won't be able to make it but that's what i would like to do. WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO COLLABORATE WITH ONE DAY? Beyonce, Sia, Mary J (it's happening right now fingers crossed), Jessie Ware, Rag N Bone, Phantogram, Foxes, Washed Out, Disclosure, Madonna, FkA Twigs, Sia, Blood Orange, Coldplay, Robyn, R Kelly, Raleigh Ritchie, Arcade Fire, Charles Bradley, Linda Perry, Katie Perry, Eats Everything, Andre 3000, Pharell, and the list goes on....i could fill a page or two to be sure. WHAT'S ON THE HORIZON FOR YOU? HAVE YOU GOT ANY BIG PROJECTS IN THE WORKS? My album, my ep with Route 94, the Pleasure state ep, and some incredible remixes are in the pipeline and then, of course, we are planning some very special Area 10 events for next year. 7 11 Issue 65 / 2014 HOUSE / ELECTRIC guestlist.net "Laidback Luke fell to his knees and started bowing at me " follow @MarcKinchen
