7 33 Issue 65 / 2014 REGGAE / DANCE HALL guestlist.net WHAT'S THE VIBE IN GLASGOW RIGHT NOW? Mad. People are building sound systems everywhere we go. We've got seven or eight sound system crews now compared to five or six years ago when there was two or three. A lot of youths picking up, building speakers, buying dub plates and running their own dances. YOU ARE HERE AT GLOBAL FOR THE FIRST TIME, BUT RIGHT NOW YOU'RE POPPING OFF ALL OVER. THIS YEAR SO FAR WHAT'S BEEN POPPING OFF? Glastonbury's just been dented a while ago. Then South America tour. Mungo has got the entire festival circuit lock, now it's the Mungo's area at the festival. WHAT DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE VIBE IN LONDON? WHAT'S YOUR SPOT? London is cool. We play in Brixton a lot, we've played at the Coronet a few times in the last couple of years, we've got a gig in October at the Forum with Mawa Kongo Nati. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE MUNGO HI FI SOUND? Forward thinking Raggae music. We take the original sound and styles and bring them up to date and take them into the future. Carrying the torch. WHAT'S THE MUNGO HIFI'S INFLUENCES? At the foundation it takes influences from Kentopi, other Jamaican sound systems like Stereo Mars but also anyone who believes in pushing the frontier of music and doing some different things. IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR INFLUENCE IS OLD-SCHOOL BUT YOUR MUSIC IS UP TO DATE, WAS THE GLASGOW THING THAT COMES IN? HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE THAT VIBE? The Glasgow thing is that people believe in music. They don't want to come here to listen cheesy music, some real fresh stuff from back in the day. Very informed crowd. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS YEAR? We have got a Gon Tony in a couple of weeks, YT is there too. It's going to be mad, we're taking the sound there for an all day session on Saturday and then we're going to tour around Europe. YOU HAVE BEEN TO NEW ZEALAND AND TO SOUTH AMERICA THIS YEAR. DO YOU TAKE CARE OF MUNGO'S SOUND SYSTEM? With a few artists as well as Charlie P, Mister Williams. There is big kind of vibe. It's a great outlet for artists, it's not just a label or a sound system. It's a crew of us. IF PEOPLE WANT TO GO AND SEE WHAT IT IS ABOUT, WHERE SHOULD THEY GO AND CHECK OUT? settvrrecord.com, that's my label website. It has been there since 2003, there are tour's dates. WHAT THEY SHOULD GO TO LISTEN FIRST? Brand new things in the street. 'Serious Time EP'. HOW ABOUT MUNGO HI FI. SOLID REGGAE FROM YOUTH TO? Solid reggae is at the core of the whole men. But always to look to new things, always look to new tapes based on music that have a common road. Anything that has that sound system at the core. It's not just a label or sound system. It's a crew of us. DID YOU HAD A GOOD TIME HERE AT GLOBAL? We had a good time. Music suited the mood, nothing too hectic in the sun. Beautiful vibes. " We take the original sound and styles and bring them up to date and take them into the future." Oshi | guestlist.net We catched up with Mungo Hifi, who is popping off all over this year. We talked about their influences, their dreams and where to find them. MUNGO HIFI Follow@mungoshifi INTERVIEW
