Throwing Snow, AKA Ross Tones is a London-based pro- ducer who has been releasing EPs and pushing the bound- aries of electronic music since 2007. However this might be his biggest year yet - he's just dropped his debut LP Mosaic on Fabric label Houndstooth. It's an ambitious col- lection of tracks which aim to fuse "elements of folk and real instruments combined with drum funk, electronica and samples", according to a press release. Guest vocal- ists Py, Adda Kaleh, and Kid A amongst others, provide a more human, radio-friendly touch. Tones supported Bonobo on his European tour and there is evidence of these similarities, yet Throwing Snow pro- ductions have a somewhat colder, darker and more ma- chinistic overtone. The lead single from the LP, The Tem- pest, was a standout moment in Bonobo's BBC Essential Mix. Tones also has numerous other project - three record labels, Left Blank, A Future Without and Snowfall, as well as a collaboration with vocalist Augustus Ghost and his own brother, under the names Snow Ghosts and Vellico respectively. Even with this packed schedule Tones found time to play a standout set at Sonar festival and will soon be playing at Lovebox - expect to hear a lot more from this growing UK producer over the next year. Boxing this track into the broad category of "house" almost doesn't do it justice - it's less club banger and more suited to the solitary night bus journey home at dawn. Blunt, repetitive percussion, subtle piano hooks and soulful vocals combine to create a complete unique track designed to transport the listener to a more peaceful place. It was first premiered in Bonobo's BBC Essential Mix a couple of months ago, and has just been released on Mister Saturday Night's latest compilation, Brothers and Sisters. ALBUM OF THE MONTH LONE - REALITY TESTING Deep and soulful new offering from the always inventive London trio. OUR PLAYLIST THE MECHANISM Disclosure x Friend Within BASIC CIRCLE Coni MELBA'S CALL Bok BOk ft Kelela CHOKE Scuba Here's the house/techno on our playlist this month ARTIST OF THE MONTH THROWING SNOW It's been 2 years since the release of the Lone's hugely succesful Galaxy Gardens album, but his next LP does not disappoint. Rather than sticking to his winning for- mula, or attempting a com- plete image revamp, Lone's Reality Testing is more like an upgrade. More consid- ered and sleek, this is an electronic album which is less about rave and more about hiphop - a sound that has influenced Lone from an early age. Tracks such as Aurora Northern Quarter and Restless City are es- sentially comprised of typi- cally house sounds but with a swinging, hip-hop drums. In a press release, Lone has said: "I wanted to make an al- bum that had both hip-hop and house beats, but that weren't completely differ- ent from each other, that shared the same sort of vibe. I love the idea of two things sat side by side, but instead of it seeming like they're complete opposites, [it's more that] those two things could almost be the same thing." - and this is exactly what he does. Yet regardless of musical ex- pertise, one thing that really makes this album irresist- ible is its summery, upbeat vibes.
