7 29 Issue 64 / 2014 INDIE / ROCK guestlist.net SO TELL US A BIT ABOUT THE BAND. Well, were 3 beautiful young men (laughs) Were from Leeds and are called "The Sunshine Underground" and we are about to release our third album. WERE DOES YOUR NAME COME FROM? Well technically we actually stole the name, it was a song by the Chemical Brothers, which was on an album of theirs called "Surrender". We used to listen to it quite a lot when we were younger, when we were starting out as a band. We just kind of took the song title, as we liked it so much. YOUR 3RD ALBUM THAT CAME OUT ON 19TH MAY, TELL US ABOUT HOW THIS WAS CREATED. We recorded it late last year going into this year and a guy called Russ Norton produced it. The album was recorded in Sheffield and it's our 3rd album. We haven't released an album since 2010 so we can't wait to get it out there. WORKING WITH ROSS ORTON WHO PRODUCED THE ARTIC MONKEYS, WHAT WAS THAT EXPERIENCE LIKE? It was really cool. I think that Ross is very accomplished as a producer. We wanted someone who has had some experience in electronic music, because our album is quite electronic sounding, and he is the best of both worlds. He is really good at recording bands, as well as recording electronic artists and a mixture of that is what we wanted from our record. So he was the best person to get involved for that reason really. WHERE DO YOU GUYS GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM AND HOW DID YOU MEET? I think we just get it from each other (laughs). We all know each other from when we were at school, really young.I've known Stu from when we were about 4 or 5. We met Craig when we were about 16, which was about 2 years from now (laughs). HOW ABOUT YOUR INFLUENCES? Well it's difficult really, we all write the songs together, but I think my influences are different to maybe Matt's influences and Stu's influences. So it's really hard to say. It's more along the kind of electronic music categories these days. We love all sorts of music at the end of the day, and as Stu mentions, its changes all the time. As theirs 3 separate songwriters with separate ideas we all just come in and make something that sounds like we wouldn't have individually done ourselves. YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER, ITS NOT LIKE EACH OF YOU PLAY A SPECIFIC ROLE? No not a specific role, I mean there used to be 4 of us as well, so we were used to a standard band set up, where youhave your drums, bass and guitars and singing. But on this album we were able to swap instruments, all write together and just play and do our programing altogether. WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHTS IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR? Well good question. I think just getting to travel and visiting places like Japan and places like that. The Festivals out in Japan are good. Glastonbury in the UK was also a big highlight. There's so many in the past 8 years since we started out. But yes that's a few of them, Japan and Glastonbury. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE MUSIC VIDEOS…EVER! Like ever? Well, "Window Licker" from Apex Twins, Chris Cunningham is great. Chemical brothers always make great videos. Daft Punk,"all around the world" That video is great (laughs) WHAT ARE YOUR BEST MEMORIES AS FRIENDS THEN? Well I don't remember much now anymore but we are always together. We live in each other's pockets, but the best memory as a band I have to say is Glastonbury. That show was one of my favorite memories for the band. We have been going to Glastonbury since we were at college. Breaking in over the fence (laughs) and getting in like that, so with now being able to play it, we think that's pretty amazing. WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS FROM THIS 3RD ALBUM, YOU GUYS EXCITED? Yeah definitely, it's exciting because it's our 1st release in four years so we have been working on it really hard for that time, and its good to finally get the music that we love and play out their. It sounds very different from things we have done before and it's a good representation of what we are listening to now and how the band are these days, so just that and playing the festivals and touring is exciting. It´s good to get back out on the road, it´s like you can spend a lot of time just writing, just recording. We did the 1st shows of this new music a few months back and didn't realize how much we missed it, as we used to tour so much before. OUR FAMOUS LAST QUESTION TO YOU IS, IF YOU COULD FILL A SWIMMING POOL WITH ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? (Shouts) GIN. Or Port (laughs) a gentlemen's choice. " INTERVIEW THE SUNSHINE UNDERGROUND Guestlist met Criag, Matt and Stu from the Leeds based indie band, The Sunshine Underground.
