36 Issue 64 / 2014 HOUSE / TECHNO guestlist.net MAXI PRIEST INTERVIEW Being the first Reggae artist to have a No.1 hit worldwide, Maxi Priest is well within the league of living legends. With a conscious mind for keeping strong to his roots and an outlook that spans many successful years as an influential musician, he certainly knows how to make an album from the heart and his newest venture 'Easy to Love' is a prime example. James Goatman | guestlist.net The album is out now in the UK and will be released worldwide next month. With this in mind, we couldn't wait to catch up with him and talk with the man himself about his influences, his life and the music that has filled it for so many years. HEY MAXI, HOW ARE YOU DOING? I'm good man, I'm glad to be a part of your Guestlist! IT'S GREAT TO HAVE YOU ON THE GUESTLIST! THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME. YOUR NEW ALBUM 'EASY TO LOVE' IS JUST OUT – HOW DID THIS COME ABOUT? WHERE DID YOU GET THE IDEAS FROM AND WHAT IS IT TO YOU? Well, what it is to me – the album is easy to love, that's for one. For me, it's been a minute since my last album and it's an exciting venture between myself and VP records. This is the official album that we've released together; they distributed a lot of stuff that I was putting out on Virgin Records. The approach that I took on this particular album was that I kind of allowed everyone to just do their thing and bring their love to those situations because before, I would be in the studio going through every bass line, every key, every chord that we put down trying to marry the songs that I'd brought to the table with a kind of hands-on situation. For this album, I decided to let the guys build a skeleton of the rhythm tracks and then bring it to me and we would sit down and write and do what I do best, I guess - sing the songs, put them on the rhythm track, send them back and they would finish them off and I would touch up what needed to be touched up. I really feel good about the whole situation. SO YOU'RE PLEASED WITH HOW EACH TRACK TURNED OUT? I am overwhelmed! The love that we've received from the first track 'Easy to Love' is huge. All of the radio stations that we've gone to have all had their own choice of what they think is the best track and that just feels so good and healthy. IT'S FAIR TO SAY THAT THERE IS AN EMERGENCE OF A YOUNGER DUB COMMUNITY THAT ARE INTERESTED IN THE BASS-HEAVY ROOTS OF THE SOUND. DOES THIS ALBUM APPEAL TO THAT GENERATION AS WELL AS THE REGGAE FANS THAT HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING YOUR MUSIC FOR YEARS? Yeah definitely, for this album, we just wanted to take it back to basics and we're obviously
