When news came of yet another Tom
Cruise-led science fiction venture, scep-
ticisms were roused as to whether the
depth of the narrative would match the
visual ambition. On viewing of the movie,
it's clear that the balance between these
aspects are infact measured perfectly and
brought together in an enthralling and
extremely enjoyable story. Director Doug
Liman plays to the strengths of the lead
actor's (Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt) ability to
bring out the benefits of the commical and
intellectual plot without letting it trail into
action-centric nonsense. The aim is strong
and the romance is subtle, making for a
brilliant, futuristic take on a classic idea, al-
lowing the audience to be both mentally
stimulated and cinematically impressed.
Its main fault presents itself with the vague
setting of the distopian situation, though
this is certainly answered for with the film's
class and timeless charm.
The summer sci-fi thriller offers more than just cheap thrills
and time-lapses
