18 IllustrateD volume 25, issue 1 f through 35 starts to show for it. Gabe Holmes has been talked of as an NFL prospect since he first set foot on the field for Purdue. His best full season so far — keep in mind, he was hurt most of last season — saw him catch 158 yards worth of passes. And now running back Raheem Mostert's being spoken of like the defibrillator for a pulse-less offense after he was dominant in a sport that's not football. Darrell Hazell wants Mostert touching the ball 20-plus times per game. He's carried the ball 43 times in his career to date. These must be some of Purdue's best players in 2014. But they have to show they're players before they can be any- one's best players, no? These are upperclassmen who have yet to really prove themselves as players Purdue can absolutely win with, but in fairness, who has? Fact is, there may not be a truly proven player on this roster, especially in the senior class that will unavoidably be central in any success Purdue experiences this season and any failure. So there's that. But there does seem to be some raw materials to work with. This is a better roster than last season's, with more ex- perience buoying it. This team isn't going to take anybody's lunch money on Saturday afternoons, but it should be more physical. Comfort is a good thing, and this roster and these coaches should see eye-to-eye much more than last season's oil-and- water cluster. There are potentially solid Big Ten players throughout this Purdue roster, and that might not sound like much, but mere "solid" would have gone a long, long way a year ago. This year, maybe it's enough for just a simple step in the right direction.
