IllustrateD volume 25, issue 1 69 f Two Purdue assistant coaches sat courtside for that game; by the morning, Weatherford's name was squarely in the mix to fill maybe the biggest need in its 2015 class: Point guard. Purdue closely tracked Indiana Elite the rest of the summer, only now watching Weatherford every bit as intently as Cline and Guy. About a week after July concluded, Matt Painter of- fered the scholarship Weatherford accepted just a few hours later. In so doing, Purdue effectively walked away from other point guard prospects who it had recruited much longer; who can be considered more naturally talent- ed; who have been much more highly recruited; and who have far more stars next to their names on the Internet, for whatever that's worth. None of that stuff mattered all that much to Pur- due after it came to appreciate Weatherford's style this summer, a style that on its surface jibes so well with what Purdue has strived to be all about. It was about effort or intensity, but also unselfish- ness, something Painter has always valued, but now more than ever. Weatherford showed it this summer in proving him- self as a point guard prospect. Ballenger says he sometimes has to nudge his best player to look to score more instead of involving others. Sometimes, too, that best player will ask to be moved down the depth chart in practice if he feels a certain teammate might need a challenge that day. That challenge would come in the same form for teammates that Weatherford's opponents see it: Fast and hard and constant, all with a certain enthusiasm for disruption and conflict. "When I smell blood, I attack," Weatherford said. "If I see weakness in a kid, I'm going to go at them. If I see that look in a kid's eye, I'm going to do what I can to make them uncomfortable." j PURDUE P E R S O N A L I Z E D P R I N t Gold and Black • 2605 Yeager Road • West Lafayette, IN 47906 • 1-800-876-4678 Visit the store at GoldandBlackDigital.com for this and other great Purdue Fan items! o My check or money order made payable to GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED is enclosed. o Please charge to my: o Visa o MasterCard o American Express o Discover Card No._________________________________________________ Exp.
