The univer- sity is certainly never going to make it the highest priority to where the university is going to do it, so we had to make it a priority in the golf program's mind." And making it that priority allows Brouse to continuing to grow his program from a recruiting perspec- tive as well. But he sees it as much more than that. "The trend in college golf is to host the NCAA Championships at the same venue in the same week- end, and in a couple of years we will be in a position to do that with 36 championship-level holes," Brouse said, referencing the men's and women's tournaments. "This golf course facility is not just a boon for golf, but it is special for the entire university. Decades from now, Pur- due will stand to greatly benefit from what is being done over the next 20 months. This has the potential to be something really special." The Dye Touch At 88, Dye will be integrally in- volved with this project. He has al- ready walked the course a couple of handful of times, making notes of what his vision for the eighth golf course on the Indiana's Pete Dye Trail. He does things the old-fash- ioned way by making notes on yel- low-pads or on napkins to turn his vision into reality. "Some of the things he thinks of when we're out there walking around I kind of scratch my head and say 'Why in the hell is he doing that?" Brouse said. "At first, it just doesn't make sense to me the first time through. But then I go back and I look at it and think it and I go 'Oh, OK, I get it.'" Jim Scott, Purdue's golf course superintendent who has been with the school since 1995, said working with Dye keeps you on your toes. "I have seen him design golf holes on napkins, and when it comes to shaping the course he will make changes or tweaks to things un- til the grass seed is planted," Scott said. "But this will be a playable course for the average golfer and he is keenly aware that's the goal.
