"He (father, Charles Porter) taught us what we needed to know; the principles that made this business successful, and then he was able to step out and say, 'Now do it,'" says David Porter, now 45. "at was all part of the plan." "Instead of being in here and microman- aging everything, he backed up and said, 'I've done it; y'all do it," says Jeff Porter, now 48. "We worked hard and learned a lot. We made mistakes along the way, but he had taught us so much about being conservative in what we buy; about always doing what you say you're going to do; and that if you make a mistake, right the mistake. We've got good relationships with manufacturers. We try to do our best for them and the same thing with our cus- tomers. He really taught us to always do the right thing." Empowering Workers to Help Customers Customers deal with workers who are empowered to take actions that smooth transactions, and if the need arises, they can speak directly with the owners. "We're here, we're accessible, and we make common-sense decisions on things," David Porter says. Both brothers started working at the deal- ership part-time in their teens and have been full-time employees for more than 25 years, which they say has been invaluable experience when it came time to manage a staff. "I've done every job throughout the years in the dealership," Jeff Porter says. "I've got at least somewhat of an idea what everybody here is going through. I'm for- tunate that I've been able to do that. Once I started learning a little bit, it took hold, and I felt confident being able to deal with customers. "I'm still learning every day. It's a great business. I'm just fortunate that I've been able to do it," he says. "Our dad was very generous to us. He was very smart in the way he did everything."
