Click is! Sign painting at the epicenter of the world E very day we click on a link or shortcut that takes us somewhere virtually. And hopefully at some point we are able to efficiently link up the virtual half of what we see on the monitor with the crucial action- able and billable qualities that may determine our future reality. When I opened up the attachment from Dimensional Innovations, a sign broker from Kansas, I saw a thumbnail computer photo of a straight-forward logo on a roof. As I scrolled down to it I heard myself whispering reverently out loud, "Wow, imagine if I got to paint that." Tip number 1: Don't "want" jobs too much. Tip number 2: Call the emailer before too much dream time sets in. On the phone I reached a laid back mid- western middleman who seemed to trust me, "Because I probably do this all the time, and how much would I charge to paint it?" Several months later I heard a garbled 80 percent of someone saying on my cell phone, "We're ready to have you do the project. And can you include a site survey in your final quote, and let us know what type of paint you plan on using that will stick to that roof?" I knew the site was on a roof somewhere in Mountain View, Calif., "Silicon Valley computer land," which according to Google Maps can take 47 minutes from my shop in Oakland. I didn't know that the roof is more specifically in the middle of the actual Google Campus, and I soon learned that if one is not driving to this particular epicenter of the world by 6 a.m., it can take up to three times longer to drive there. And once there, with the proper insurance, etc., I would be fitted with a special access tag, and escorted to the roof via a ladder in a narrow maintenance well, which was Steven Vigeant owns Berkeley Signs, a commercial sign company serving the San Francisco Bay Area since 1985.
