Some examples include printing electronics, printing functional human tissues that can be used for medi- cal research, making 3D printed jewelry, or experimenting with 3D printing full- sized buildings. The company announced its Spark software platform in May of this year. "Today the link between software and hardware for 3D printing is in need of improvement. Software must translate digital content into the right format to be interpreted and produced by the printer, but there are many potential points for failure in that process. Often you don't know if a 3 D print will suc- ceed or fail until the process has started, which can be expensive in terms of both cost and time." He points out that Spark offers a common and open plat- form that shortens that path between digital content and hardware. "This will facilitate a much improved information exchange between design software and the printer, so software can address and offer automated fixes and optimization to the design before production begins," Martinez says. Roland's Rapid Printing Solutions Hammer explains that Roland's prod- ucts offer an economical entry into this market. "One of the fastest and most accurate rapid prototype machines on the market, the MDX-540 has a price tag that is less than half the cost of most additive systems," she says. A four-axis desktop CNC device, the MDX-540 features powerful CAM soft- ware that quickly and easily produces everything from functional and snap-fit parts and prototypes to light metal molds and custom jewelry. The Roland MDX-40A CNC machine combines the advanced capabilities of an SRP system with the ease-of-use of a benchtop CNC mill to provide product engineers and designers with a powerful 3D milling device. "While technologically advanced, devices such as our MDX series SRP mills are surprising user friendly. They also come bundled with SRP player software that makes operation easy. Signs shops would be able to use our SRP devices to mill 3D elements that could be incorpo- rated into signage for some truly unique effects," she concludes.
