ASU is still not on the same level of Michigan, but it is now a fellow FBS program — at least in name, although they still don't field a full compliment of FBS recruiting classes — and they enter their first season in the Sun Belt Conference. "We're excited about this opportunity to go back to Ann Arbor," Satterfield said. "Since 2007, as an alum, I obviously have special memories of that place. Obviously, it's a different team, different coaching staff — a lot of things are different. "We're picked as the big-time underdog again, and I think we would be anytime we played Michigan just from where they are in their program and where we are in ours. I think just the fact that we beat them in 2007 proves that the underdog can win." Appalachian State Notes: According to Phil Steele's 2014 College Football Pre- view, Appalachian State has the coun- try's most experienced offensive line with all five starters back from a year ago and combining for 143 career starts … The Mountaineers were picked to finish seventh in the Sun Belt preseason coaches' poll … ASU allowed an aver- age of 400.5 yards per game last year, but still outgained opponents with a clip of 409.8 offensive yards per con- test … Appalachian State started 2013 with a 1-6 record before going 3-2 down the stretch with losses against Geor- gia and Southern Conference co-cham- pion Chattanooga; meanwhile, Michi- gan started 5-0 before finishing 2-6 … Despite a plethora of returning start- ers, 64 of App State's 102 players are in their first or second year with the team … In addition to Satterfield, two other coaches will return to the same sideline they were on in 2007 during the historic upset — App State's inside linebackers coach Dale Jones and Michigan running backs coach Fred Jackson … Since 2005, Appalachian State's 91 wins rank sev- enth among all Division I programs.
