8 SNOWEST SEPTEMBER 2014 Forty years is a long time. More than half the 367 million people liv- ing in the United States and Canada were not even born when the first issue of SnoWest Magazine was printed. Of course, back then it was called Snowmobile West Magazine. Pretty much half of our readership consists of snowmobilers who either grew up on SnoWest or stumbled into SnoWest when they first encountered snowmobiling. In other words, SnoWest Magazine has been here all their lives. It starts to make one feel a little old. Now those employees at Harris Publishing who were part of Snowmobile West Magazine when it started in 1974 have long since retired or passed away. But there are a few of us who have been here more than 30 years. And the ownership and man- agement of SnoWest has stayed in the Harris family for the entire 40 years. So the staff at SnoWest are tak- ing this 40th anniversary celebration very seriously. That's why it will be a theme throughout this season—in our magazines, at our snowmobile shows and finishing off at our celebration in West Yellowstone, MT, on Jan. 30-31 (which you are all invited to attend). During the past 40 years we have seen a lot of changes within the snow- mobile industry—from leaf springs to air shocks, from carburetors to elec- tronic fuel systems. We've also seen a change in riding styles, trail mainte- nance and clothing. In upcoming issues of SnoWest, we will do a lot of the same things we've done over the past 40 years—provide you with the latest innovations, prod- uct information, places to ride and inside information from the news mak- ers—basically, keep you up-to-date on everything happening within the snow- mobile industry. We'll also try to walk you back down memory lane to recall some of those special moments and events that have made your snowmobiling experi- ences so memorable. Forty years is a long time within this industry. Yet we also recognize that many of our advertisers and supporters have been at this business for as long or longer than SnoWest Magazine. Some are even having their own special anni- versary celebrations this season. Sounds like there's going to be plen- ty of birthday cake for everyone. During the past 40 years, more than 4 billion (that's a four and nine zeros) people have been born around the world. Countries have come and gone. Technology has greatly advanced.
