goal attempt early in the second quarter. U-M
chewed up yardage, going from its own 39 to
the Notre Dame 31, but an illegal procedure
penalty killed the drive, and the kick never
stood a chance.
Golson then picked his way downfield,
cutting up the Michigan coverage on a num-
ber of short to intermediate throws. He guid-
ed the Irish 80 yards in 13 plays, picking up
a crucial fourth-and-three at the Michigan
36 on an 11-yard slant, and connecting with
wide receiver Amir Carlisle on a one-yard
TD toss at the 3:58 mark.
Down 14-0 and reeling, Michigan might
have been more than willing to tell the Irish
good riddance. But the home team already
seemed to be packing up the moving van and
heading away at full speed.
Golson got one more shot before the half,
and once again riddled the Wolverines. He
drove the Irish 56 yards in just 50 seconds
with no timeouts to work with, unloading
a 24-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver
Will Fuller behind redshirt junior cornerback
Blake Countess with just 34 seconds remain-
ing in the half.
Golson stood 16-of-21 at the half, with 169
yards passing and a pair of TD throws. Mich-
igan, meanwhile, scrambled a step behind on
defense and wasn't opportunistic on offense.
"We did a lot of good things," Gardner of-
fered. "We just didn't convert on third down
and take advantage of the opportunities we
had. We had some drives there."
