Emergency care is the gateway to our Hospital for our community. The Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Centre at Mount Sinai Hospital is redefining emergency medicine and is a provincial leader in this specialized area of care. The Centre is committed to research, education and policy development, helping to enable innovation for those who require urgent medical attention at the Hospital and beyond. Never in our history has there been so much incredible momentum surrounding Mount Sinai Hospital. It is truly an exhilarating time to be part of the Mount Sinai community! The Campaign to Renew Sinai is our largest campaign to date and will result in the redevelopment of our entire Hospital and an opportunity to reimagine the experience of every patient who walks through our doors. It is because of you, our dedicated community of supporters, that we are poised to achieve this vision. The outstanding donors who have already stepped forward have set the stage for this significant transformation. This issue of The Best Medicine Matters highlights some of the extraordinary gifts we have received to help Renew Sinai. You can read about the dramatic transformations planned for our Emergency Department and our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and learn about our Human Milk Bank — the first of its kind in Ontario. You can also get an exclusive preview of redevelopment plans for our lobby, where we will create a welcoming and healing environment that will set a special tone for patients and families. The future is a very exciting one for Mount Sinai, and we look forward to being on this journey with you. Sincerely, Kevin R. Emergency Medicine Best Wait Times Dr. Howard Ovens, Director of the Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Centre, also serves as the Provincial Lead in Emergency Medicine. Through the work of Dr. Ovens and his colleagues, Emergency Department (ED) performance across the province has steadily improved. Patients are waiting 1.2 hours less and 86 per cent are receiving treatment within target time frames. At Mount Sinai, wait times have been reduced by 20 to 30 per cent and the Hospital has achieved the best combined wait time scores of any academic hospital in the province. Leading Research A national study led by Dr. Bjug Borgundvaag, Assistant Director, Research, at the Schwartz/Reisman Emergency Centre, has shown that EDs can take a leadership role in addressing the issue of community acquired MRSA — an antibiotic resistant infection. Up to one-third of patients in EDs with skin infections have community acquired MRSA. Dr. Borgundvaag is working with the Toronto Central Local Health Integration Network Antibiotic Stewardship Committee to develop guidelines for the rational use of antibiotics in the treatment of these conditions.
