GoldanDBlack express • volume 25, express 3 • 12 BY ALAN KARPICK AKarpick@GoldandBlack.com T here really are some eerie simi- larities. In 1984, Notre Dame was riding high, ranked eighth in the country. The Irish were a three-touchdown favorite to beat Purdue. The Irish were the home team in Indianapo- lis. Purdue hadn't decided defini- tively who its quar- terback was going to be and was in desperate need of a win, or at least a good showing, to begin to turn its pro- gram around. In 2014, with the exception that the Irish are ranked 11th and being a four- touchdown favorite, the venue being up- dated, just about every- thing is the same. Thirty years ago there was lots of talk of the Purdue team needing to gain confidence in itself, much the same as it is today. Coach Leon Burtnett was do- ing all he could to turn around his program as he prepared to bus his team an hour to dedicate the new Hoosier Dome. But he knew he better right the ship and fast. It was his third year at the helm and the natives were becoming restless. Burtnett had taken over after Jim Young resigned following the 1981 season. He had served as Young's defen - sive coordina- tor, assembling the vaunted "Junk De- fense" that led the Boil- ermakers to three straight bowl wins from 1978-80. Bur tnett and his teams, which were just 6-15-1 after his first two years, had found every way imaginable to lose games. Quarterbacks run - ning out of bounds when they shouldn't have been stopping the clock, blocked punts, you name it. Burtnett and the Boilermak- ers needed a change of luck. "We couldn't get out of our own way," quarterback Jim Ev- erett recalled. "We knew we had the ability, we just had to have good fortune to go along with our talent level." In fairness to Burtnett, Young's last couple recruiting classes did not provide much talent. In Burt- nett's first two seasons at the helm, the Boilermakers showed flashes of ability, but inexperience usually ruled the day and the scoreboard. With the hopes of turning things around, Burtnett resorted to hiring a positive-thinking expert to speak to his team in fall camp prior to the 1984 season. Fred Mills of EDGE helped focus the youth - ful Boilers on desire, discipline and preparation. His efforts managed to get the attention of the team. l a f a y e t t e s a v i n g s p r e s e n t s l a f a y e t t e l e g e n d : p u r d u e - n o t r e d a m e 1 9 8 4 Dedication Game Surprise Will history repeat itself three decades later?
