"Everything is balanced: the height of the ceiling, the width of the walls." He points to a room like the library, which is balanced by three windows on one side and two windows and a fi eplace on the other. Moreover, "Everything is set up for a view," Eisenhauer says, whether it's of the gardens from the draw- ing room or of the fi eplaces from the upstairs hallway. And although the home is certainly stately, it isn't showy or os- tentatious, like homes belonging to families like the Astors in Newport, Eisenhauer says. "Everything is staged," he says. "But it's done very subtly." Despite the so-called "subtle" intention behind the house's design, there are certainly features that recall the wealth and importance of the family, including the pristinely carved woodwork by Samuel McIntire; the scarab beetle–de- tailed mantel and fi eplace procured from a trip down the Nile River in Egypt; the rare French wallpaper depicting the love story of Cupid and Psyche; and closet rods hung 10 feet above the floor to accommodate long, elegant gowns. As Eisenhauer puts it, the mansion "really was a kind of stage."
