16 nshoremag.com October 2014 Pip Nielsen settled with her family in Marblehead nearly 13 years ago after being based in London with extended stays in both New Zealand and Australia. Marblehead feels like home with the combination of winding streets of an old town and a large population of "Brits." As an artist she finds the rocky coastline of the North Shore a constant source of inspiration. It is time once again to bring the outdoor furniture in, put the storm win- dows on, and plant ornamental cabbages and mums, which will survive the firs cold snap, as we wait for the long winter to set in. Autumn is also the perfect time to assess our own living spaces and plan for renovation or interior design pro- jects that we have been putting off while enjoying the summer months. This issue of Northshore magazine is full of ideas and inspiration to turn your house into a place to call home. This October, we explore all facets of home design—from restoration to complete makeovers and everything in between. Regina Cole visits a home in Manchester-by-the-Sea renovated by architect John Margolis. Margolis called on the house's original 1880's sensibility to revive the structure to its former gran- deur (page 168). In the same town, Wilson Kelsey Design tackles a much older struc- ture—the Federal-style Forster Leach House. The firm and the homeowners re- searched historical buildings extensively to bring back period details to the house, including the original hearth room. The homeowners are truly stewards of this old building, taking good care to preserve it for future generations (page 180). Carpenter & MacNeille addresses a structure with a more recent history—a 1960s beach house in need of some TLC. The location is breathtaking, but the house needed a fresh perspective. What started out as a project to replace carpet and add a new coat of paint morphed into an entire makeover, including a new kitchen and ca- thedral ceiling. The home today is light and airy, reflecting its seaside locale (page 194). While these architects needed to work within an existing framework, interior de- signer Catherine Skaletsky returns to her hometown of Swampscott and decorates a new condo overlooking Boston Harbor. Soothing colors, comfortable furnishings, and an impressive art collection turn this "clean slate" into a welcoming home for this exceptional designer and her husband (page 202). We hope you enjoy this issue of Northshore magazine dedicated to all things home. Cheers, Nancy E. Berry
