GoldanDBlack express • volume 25, express 4 • 18 that's true. I'll look over at Kugler and tell him something, if I think he missed something. "And that's the same with the younger guys. I'll tell Tretter all the time, because he's taking a lot of reps right now, to fix something, or I'll tell him to make sure I'm low enough, or make sure I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing, and he does. I really appreciate that. It helps that everybody is so close." The chemistry might be tested a bit on Saturday. Hedelin, a highly regarded transfer from City College of San Francisco, can play in his first game after sit - ting the last three. A na- tive of Stockholm, Sweden, Hedelin was nicked by the NCAA for play- ing in non-paid club games before coming to the United States. The 6-foot-4, 295-pounder is said to play with an aggressive style that is welcomed. "I'm very competitive," he said. "I've always liked contact sports. I played soccer for 15 years. It's not the same as American football, but there's a little bit of contact. Some- times I hit people too hard when I played soccer, so I think it's good that I switched to football." Hedelin should fit in. He's a bit of a novice still and probably better at run blocking than pass protect- ing, but he'll get after it. And that's a trait shared by his teammates. His availability should give some others a break. Cermin will be able to come off the field, but he can also play other positions. In practice this week, he got first-team reps at right tackle, where he could spell Prince, and at cen- ter, where he could fill in for Kugler, if needed. "Cam is a very good ath- lete," Hedelin said. "He can play everywhere on the O-line, he's an awesome guy, very good athlete. I think this will work out very good." The Boilermakers likely still have room to get bet- ter. Of the six, four — Cermin, King, Roos and Prince — are sophomores, and Kugler and Hedelin are juniors. Tretter, who would be the next in line to play, is only a redshirt fresh- man, and Corey Clements, who plays on the field goal team, is a junior. They're working hard, too. "They're in there studying tape," Bridge said. "They're active in the weight room. They eat dinner to- gether, they eat breakfast together, they live together. They enjoy work- ing with each other. Everything they do is about each other. I know that they're into it. "Now what makes them a hard- working group? Well, if you watch us practice, the guys work hard. If you're in our meeting room, you can hear them thinking. They're processing, it's important to them. I don't think there's any doubt that we're working hard." The line's approach is influenc- ing teammates too, says running back Raheem Mostert. "They're all trying to be that brotherhood," he said. "That's helping because it's rubbing off on other players within the of- fense. I wouldn't say the running back group last year wasn't a close-knit group, but right now it's like we're all brothers, we're all family and that's what we've tak- en from the O-linemen. They've given that off on everyone else on the entire offense." j Brian Neubert J.C. transfer David Hedelin is added to the mix Saturday and is likely to play significantly at left tackle.
