"Be- lieve it or not, for a lot of the game, sacking him was not our objective. We wanted to put him in a cup and have four guys right in front of him containing him, put our hands up and make him throw it in a different environment, a dif- ferent stadium and people in front of him." During practice last week, Purdue's linebackers worked on a blitz drill, in which they pursued a "quarterback," in this case a man- ager holding a football, while try- ing to get around a blocker. But, as position coach Marcus Freeman repeatedly said, they weren't sup- posed to ever get behind the QB. That's a no-no. "There's nothing good back there," Hudson said. Hitting tHe Home run Purdue's running game is looking for big plays. Last week, in rushing for only 56 yards vs. Notre Dame, the Boil- ermakers' long was only 11 yards. On several carries, Ra- heem Mostert looked close to breaking into the second level, only to be tackled by an Irish defender that had slipped off a block. "That team that we just played, and this team this week, are pretty dog- gone athletic and they shed blocks really well," Shoop said of ND and SIU. "So what looks like what might be 10 yards closes off quick. We've got to have that mental discipline to not just finish a game but finish a play. Sometimes we blocked a play just wonderfully for five seconds; we need to block it for six." A Different Look Purdue's offense will face a Southern Illinois defense that fea- tures a three-man front. That'll present some new challenges. "We deeply respect them," Shoop said. "They can blitz and slant and shed blocks. These are some athletic guys, I'm telling you they are, and they cause turn- overs. They get their hands on the ball. They have five fumbles and three interceptions already through three games and that's why they're 3-0, so the problems that they cause are that it's a little bit different defense and so we re- ally just have to study it. "Not that our plays are chang- ing or anything, but you're not al- ways blocking a three-technique and you don't get to double team guys the same way that you do when they're shaded in gaps. They force more single blocks and they shed blocks." j Tom Campbell Defensive coordinator Greg Hudson liked his team's effort on Saturday, particularly in its hustle.
