Top plays No.3 On impressive b a c k - t o - b a c k plays for Purdue's defense, Jalani Phillips had a sack and then raced downfield to recover a fumble that cornerback Antoine Lewis forced, setting up Purdue's offense on the 26-yard line with about four min- utes left in the first half. Two passes on the first two downs gained seven yards, leaving the Boilermakers staring at a third- and-three down 10-7. On third down, Danny Etling lined up under center with Jordan Jurasevich as the fullback for Ra- heem Mostert in an I formation. Tight ends Gabe Holmes and Jus- tin Sinz were on the left side, Sinz lined up in an H-back alignment. It's a formation the Boilermakers typically run out of. Not this time. Etling faked a hand- off to Mostert, rolled right and threw the ball into the end zone. After coming off press coverage, DeAn- gelo Yancey was fight- ing Notre Dame corner- back Cody Riggs when the ball came. Yancey leaped for it, with Riggs draped all over him, showed strong hands to snatch the ball. Then, coming down, Yancey had the pres- ence to not only tap his right toe inside the end zone but also drag the left foot while se- curely keeping the ball cradled against his body, completing the touchdown for the lead with three minutes left. No.2 It was too much time to give Ev- erett Golson. He methodically led Notre Dame down the field, completing two passes, keeping the ball for an eight-yard carry and another run to set up first-and-10 on Purdue's 45-yard with 51 seconds left. Coming out of a timeout, Gol- son connected with Corey Rob- inson on a 32-yard pass down the sideline, setting up first down inside the red zone. Purdue got a sack on the next play, but on sec- ond-and-13 from the 15 with 21 seconds left, Golson made a game- changing play. On the snap, Golson was looking left toward three receiv- ers. Purdue end Ryan Russell raced past Golson, forcing him up in the pocket. Russell went too far upfield, though, allowing Golson to slide through the right side of the line and take off for the end zone. Golson out-raced the Boil- ermakers to the corner, scoring with 13 seconds left. The Irish never lost the lead. No.1 N o t r e D a m e pushed its lead to 24-14 in the third quarter, but the Boilermakers seemed prepared to respond. Etling completed four consecutive passes to four receivers to get Purdue into Irish territory. Then Etling missed Gabe Holmes open on the left sideline after a pump fake, bringing up third- and-five from the 34. With Akeem Hunt and Raheem Mostert split in the backfield and Dan- ny Anthrop stacked with Yancey on one side of the field, Etling took the shotgun snap. Yancey flashed open over the mid- dle on a crossing route. There were no defenders in his vicinity. But, un- der some pressure, Etling threw the pass just behind Yancey. Instead of at least a long gainer — probably a touchdown to get Purdue back into the game — the Boilermakers were forced to go for it on fourth down. Holmes dropped a pass.
