However, quality third-party support for used equipment is available. • No manufacturer warranty. How- ever, some used equipment dealers may offer limited warranties. Pros of New • Fewer initial repairs • Factory warranty • More post-sale service Cons of New • Cost of entry. There's no question that a new printer costs more than a used one. However, high-quality new print- ing equipment is available for less money now than ever before. The Media Top-line media can cost a lot of money as well, but high-quality media doesn't have to break the budget. There are a lot of lower-cost medias in the marketplace, many of which offer a high-quality product and a generous variety of media types. Optima media— sold though Advantage Sign & Graphic Solutions (—is a great place to start looking. The average price difference between premium and Optima media is anywhere from 10 to 35 percent depending on the product. Often they meet the same specifications as other branded products for a reduced cost. Optima media products are tested and validated for compatibility on vari- ous printing platforms including solvent, latex, UV and thermal. The end result of this rigorous testing is products that deliver great value alternatives for print media, but also provide great print quality and consistency from one roll to the next. However, beware of super-inexpen- sive media. Quality can vary wildly from batch to batch. The Ink One way to save money with inks is to have your printer set up with a bulk ink system. Bulk inks are much more eco- nomical than ink cartridges, and some printers are available with that option. Additionally, bulk systems can be pur- chased that will convert a cartridge sys- tem to bulk. For mid- to high-volume shops the savings are even greater. Most bulk ink systems are much more eco- nomical than cartridge ink systems. The key is to find a compatible ink that won't cause problems that erase any savings you may have found.
