S I G N & D I G I T A L G R A P H I C S • October 2014 • 41 Q: From a technology standpoint, where do you see wide-format print- ing going in the next few years? As an industry we are clearly near- ing the end of the "smallest drop size" battles, as it relates to differentiating the print quality in the wide-format print market. The quality is clearly on par with legacy photo processes, so for us the real challenge now is proving that our platforms combine quality, reliability and productivity and are a viable replacement for the short-run offset market. Brent Moncrief VP, Sales & Marketing Durst Image Technology U.S., LLC Wide-format digital printing will continue to grow and expand as com- panies find new applications and mar- kets to serve. As the technology con- tinues to advance, becoming better, faster, more affordable and even easier to use, more companies will adopt it. The ink is a key component for new applications. The inks are becoming better with larger color gamuts, better adhesion and increased durability. New ink technology like UV for example is gaining popularity in new markets such as specialty and industrial. UV hybrid machines are becoming more effective with flexible ink to print onto more types of substrates. Added colors will expand on CMYK to include spot and fluorescent colors. Expect more expansion into the pre-press and offset markets with G7 color certification of wide-format print- ing systems. Direct-to-textile, higher- production printing on a digital platform to include custom jobs and medium run capability with improved print technol- ogy including media feed mechanisms, just to name a few.
